Gemini: Google's AI Assistant

What It Is

Gemini is Google's AI. You might remember it used to be called Bard — same thing, new name. What makes Gemini different from ChatGPT or Claude is that it's built right into the Google apps you probably already use every day.

That's the big selling point. Gemini can read your Gmail, look at your Google Calendar, check files in your Google Drive, and search the web — all without you having to copy and paste things around. It's like having an AI assistant that already knows your stuff because it lives where your stuff is.

If your life runs on Google — Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Calendar — Gemini is the most natural fit. You don't have to switch tools or move your work around.

What Can It Do For Me?

  • Help with email — draft replies, summarize long threads, find important messages
  • Work with your files — ask questions about documents in your Google Drive
  • Plan your schedule — check your calendar and help you find time for things
  • Search the web — get answers with current information and links to sources
  • Look at pictures and videos — upload a photo and ask questions about it
  • Help in Google Docs — write, edit, and brainstorm right where you're already working
  • Translate languages — and explain things in simpler terms

Pricing

Free: Surprisingly useful. You get web search, image understanding, and basic help with Google apps. Good enough for most casual users.

Google AI Premium ($20/month): The full experience — deeper integration with your Google apps, the more powerful version of Gemini, and 2TB of Google cloud storage thrown in.

The free version is one of the better free AI options out there. The paid version makes sense if you live in Google's world all day.

The Good and The Bad

Pros:

  • Works inside Google apps you already know — no new tool to learn
  • Can actually read your emails and files (with your permission) to give better help
  • Searches the web automatically — no separate step needed
  • The free version is quite good
  • Handles photos, videos, and documents well
  • Comes with 2TB of storage on the paid plan, which is a nice bonus

Cons:

  • Not quite as smart as ChatGPT or Claude on tricky questions
  • Writing can feel a bit generic and flat
  • Sometimes refuses to answer things that seem totally fine — Google's safety filters are strict
  • The name change from Bard to Gemini confused a lot of people
  • Fewer tips and community resources online than ChatGPT
  • Some Google app integrations need to be set up by an admin if you use a work account

Should You Try It?

If you use Google for everything — Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar — Gemini is the most convenient AI you can get. Instead of copying an email into ChatGPT to ask for help with a reply, you just ask Gemini right there in Gmail. That saves time and hassle.

The free version is good enough that you should just try it and see if you like it. If you find yourself using it throughout the day for work, the $20/month paid version is worth it, especially since it comes with extra cloud storage.

But if you don't use Google apps much, or if you want the smartest AI regardless of where it lives, ChatGPT or Claude might be better picks. Gemini's biggest advantage is convenience — it's where you already are. That matters a lot for everyday use, but it's not enough to beat the others on raw brainpower.
